TITLE:
Social media
Mental Media

TOPIC INTRODUCTION:

The following production design is for a short film about the negative effects that social media has on the behavioural and psychological health of youth in Australian today. The film will entail a director who explores the world of social media and exposes out the hard facts. There will be interviews of people who are educated in this area, for example, a psychologist.

SYNOPSIS:

Blackness. 5 shots are rapidly shown in the space of 1 second of social media on phones and laptops, and close ups of people’s eyes glued to the screen. Meanwhile, buzzing/crackling noises are heard. Then immediate blackness and silence. Another 5 shots again. Blackness. A medium close up shot of the directors face at the beach, as she says “Social Media.” These words are typed over her face. Blackness. “An online platform that has been increasingly taking storm over the past decade.” Various shots of people on Facebook, Instagram, etc. in public, during social gatherings and in school. “Predominantly used for connecting people around the globe, allowing various forms of interaction between people, and creating, sharing and exchanging information. But while Social Media can be really convenient and helpful to our modern lives, there are many aspects of it that can be extremely harmful to… HUMAN BEHAVIOURAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH.” The words appear white and bold on the screen. A long shot fades in of narrator walking along the beach towards the camera, sharing negative statistics of social media and its effects on teen mental health.

Mid shot of a psychologist fades in talking about how social media can negatively effect behaviour and the habits of the brain. This question will be asked; “Social media is a major part of the lives of our youth today. How can social media have a negative effect on people’s mental health?” Psychologist will also talk about how social media can be linked to depression and anxiety within youth today. Fade to black. Mid eye-level shot of narrator sitting down at a desk with various forms of technology, all open to different social media sites. The room is slightly dark and the screens of the technology are bright. “Did you know that the average person spends 4 years of their lives looking down at their mobile phones? Statistics have shown that nowadays the average person now spends more time on their devices each day than they do sleeping each night.” Narrator talks about teens and youth constantly seeking for other people’s attention and approval which is shown by getting a certain number of likes on social media. Narrator begins to stand up, shot cuts to a higher angle and the narrator is seen standing up into eye-level of the shot. Narrator then speaks about young people constantly becoming addicted to their technology devices and this is one of the reasons why ADHD , depression and anxiety statistics are on the rise. While they are speaking, there will be various statistical graphs and charts to assist with the dialogue. Narrator then begins to turn their body to the right. Shot immediately cuts to the right side of the narrator as they turn to face the camera. Narrator then concludes. “And so we have it. Social media is one of the many causes of mental illnesses in today’s youth. Think twice before you let yourself become addicted.” Narrator walks off to the right. Fade to black. Credits appear, closing the  film.

JUSTIFICATION:

I am making a film highlighting the negative effects of social media on youth today in regards to mental health. Showing an interview with a psychologist can make my message more powerful and more believable having consult a professional on the topic matter. Constantly showing numerous amounts of videos of youth intently being on social media backs up my point of social media being addictive and a bad influence on this generation. Statistics constantly being shown makes the information seem more reliable and more real to the audience.

Further Collaborating Doco Ideas

In class today, my group and I did further documentary planning for our 5-9 minute documentary task. Because Nadia was away, Libby and I focused more on questions that we will ask the people that we are interviewing. This is important because these people will be giving us the core to our film. We made sure that we had many questions to ask them in case they didn't give long enough answers.

LINEAR PROGRESSION THROUGH THE DOCO
  • Positive/happy shots of people on social media showing it in a positive light - laughing - selfies - in groups looking at laptops and phones
  • “Social media has been a important tool in communication in the 21st century with such apps as Facebook, Instagram, twitter, Snapchat and many more. They provide instant access to friends and family around the world, keeping teens in the loop with just a touch of a button.”
  • Cut to black
  • Ahs shot idea - 20 seconds
  • Psychologist Interview
  • Statistics being visually demonstrated through whiteboard drawings
  • Mr Andrews Interview - phone experiment (?)
  • Interview School Girls QU: “How many hours a day would you say you spend on social media?” as well as “Have you ever stayed up late watching Netflix, YouTube or going on social media?”

RANDOM VISUAL IDEAS TO INCORPORATE
  • Animations - electronic drawings - of statistics
  • Time lapse - girl standing in the middle of a busy hallway/public area, on her phone, with people rushing past
  • Connor Franta style
  • Narrator sitting down at a desk with various forms of technology, all open to different social media sites. The room is slightly dark and the screens of the technology are bright.
  • “Draw My Life” style whiteboard drawings LIEN

PSYCHOLOGIST QUESTIONS

  • What are the effects of using too much social media?
  • Do you think teens and youth today will be better off without social media at all?
  • Do you think the use and the addiction to social media will get worse through the younger generations?
  • Do you think the increased rate of mental health was due to the increased use of social media?

MR ANDREWS QUESTIONS
  • What are the issues that students come to you about that are related to social media?/Are there many students that come to you with issues that are dealing with social media?
  • Have you seen any increases of mental health issues with students who come to you with issues about social media?
  • Do you see a lot of students using social media while you are trying to teach? Does this affect their learning?

Social Media and Sleep

Research

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2989952/How-technology-taking-lives-spend-time-phones-laptops-SLEEPING.html

According to the daily Mail Australia, the average person now spends more time on their phone and laptop than SLEEPING. Here are the statistics that were shown.
  • The average person spends 8 hours and 41 mins on electronic devices
  • This is 20 minutes more than the average night's sleep, it is claimed
  • Four in 10 smartphone users check their phone in the night if it wakes them
  • More time is spent checking emails in the morning than eating breakfast
  • Sleep experts warn constant exposure to devices is leading to poor sleep
  • Expert advises making the bedroom a 'tech-free' zone in order to boost rest
A recent focus group of almost 500 students aged 13-15 held by Dr Ramlakhan showed cause for concern as an alarming number complained of sleep problems and feeling exhausted.
Of those who complained, almost 80 per cent were using electronic devices in bed.

Prince Ea & ADHD Research

Whilst doing this documentary task, my mind kept thinking about a video that I once saw on Facebook... (ironic, i know, but hear me out) It was posted by a guy called 'Prince Ea' and he posts very influential video's about lots of different arguable issues. One in particular is called Can We Auto-Correct Humanity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRl8EIhrQjQ

I always think back to this video because it relates to the topic of social media. Also he takes the negative side of it, which is the side that my group and I are taking in this documentary task. I re-watched this video and took a few statistical notes and also some visual notes for some inspiration for some shot ideas for the documentary. This includes bringing up the increase of ADHD within the past years, which can evidently be caused by technology and social media.

http://www.healthline.com/health/adhd/facts-statistics-infographic#3

From this website I found that cases and diagnoses of ADHD have been increasing dramatically in the past few years.

Percentage of American children aged 4-17 with ADHD

  • 2003: 7.8%
  • 2007: 9.5%
  • 2011: 11 %

  • ADHD doesn’t increase a person’s risk for other conditions or diseases. But some people with ADHD — especially children — are more likely to experience a range of co-existing conditions. They can sometimes make social situations more difficult or school more challenging.
    Some co-existing conditions include:
    • learning disabilities
    • conduct disorders and difficulties, including antisocial behaviour, fighting, and oppositional defiant disorder
    • anxiety disorder
    • depression
    • bipolar disorder
    • Tourette’s syndrome
    • substance abuse
    • bed-wetting problems
    • sleep disorders

    FURTHER RESEARCH

We have been assigned our task of writing a treatment and creating a 3-column script. For this task, my group, Nadia, Libby and I, must work by ourselves, not sharing any ideas among each other. This is so that when we come to actually filming our documentary, we can combine the many features of our own individual treatments and create a longer film among us. Further research into my selected topic was made. I have decided to put in bold the information that I think will be extremely useful in this task and I will most likely use in my documentary planning process.

    http://blog.degreed.com/10-ways-social-media-affects-our-mental-health/

10 WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECTS OUR MENTAL HEALTH

    • 1. Social Media is Addictive
    • "Studies show that 63% of Americans log on to Facebook daily, and 40% log on multiple times each day."
    • 2. Social media makes us compare our lives with others'
    • "Posts on social media many times present an idealized version of what’s happening, what something looks like, or how things are going. This can lead users to constantly compare themselves to others and think less of their own lives. If things are going particularly well for people in your newsfeed and you’re having a rough day, of course this will likely negatively affect your mood."
    • People who are constantly on social media are more exposed to this and therefore would be more prone to feeling this negative mood. Feeling bad about your life can have a huge affect on your mental health and often leads into depression.
    • 3. Social media makes us restless
    • Two out of Three people admit that they have difficulty relaxing when unable to use their social media accounts
    • 4. Social media gives rise to cyberbullying
    • Cyberbullying is a concern especially among adolescents
    • An organization that aims for internet safety, called Enough is Enough, conducted a survey that found 95% of teenagers who use social media have witnessed cyberbullying, and 33% have been victims themselves.
    • Situations like this can lead to people becoming anti-social and distancing themselves from others and developing a case of depression.

    • 5. Social Media glamorises drug and alcohol use
    • A study that explored the relationship between teenagers, social media, and drug use found that 70% of teenagers ages 12 to 17 use social media, and that those who interact with it on a daily basis are five times more likely to use tobacco, three times more likely to use alcohol, and twice as likely to use marijuana.
    • In addition, 40% admitted they had been exposed to pictures of people under the influence via social media, suggesting correlation between the two factors.
    • 6. Social Media can make us unhappy
    • This links back to the point of people comparing their lives to others on social media and therefore feeling worse about themselves.
    • 7. Social media can lead to the fear of missing out
    • It can evoke anxiety and cause social media users to question why everyone is “having fun without them.”
    • 8. Social media often leads to multitasking
    • Research has shown that our brains don’t have the capacity to fully focus our attention on two things at once, and instead multitasking causes our brain to quickly switch from one task to another. This hinders information processing and productivity.
    • (points 9 &10 weren't exactly negative points about social media so I have decided to leave that out.)

RESEARCH: Social Media and Human Behaviour and Psychology

Today in class, my group and I are doing research on our area of choice within the effects of social media. I am focusing on human behaviour and psychology. This is what I've found.

The Social and Psychological Impact Of Online Social Networking:

    http://www.psychology.org.au/publications/inpsych/2010/december/social/

Negative experiences from online social networking

A considerable number of survey respondents (28%) reported having had a negative online experience, with 60 per cent of those aged below 30 most likely to report this. These participants were asked to provide further information about the negative experience.
For most respondents the experience reflected unwanted contact or other people posting inappropriate or upsetting information about them online. Some respondents specified having experienced online bullying and provided examples such as abusive messages and harassment from someone of the opposite sex.
Although research into young people reports varying rates of bullying across ages and is based on different definitions of bullying, the results for adults participating in the NPW survey are not very different from the findings for young people.
However, it should be noted that in the current survey participants were asked to identify a bad experience rather than bullying per se. If the survey had asked specifically about bullying this may have led to different results.

    Group Brainstorming for Documentary

For our first task this year, we have a group task to put together a documentary about the EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA. Last Tuesday and today we are coming together with our group and brainstorming ideas that can have anything to do with this social media documentary.

    • Sleep Deprivation as a result of obsession of the internet and social media
    • How language has taken a backseat because of the changing slang and shortened words used in text language
    • Interview a psychologist and get their view on social media and its effect on human behaviour
    • Lack of human contact as a result of social media and its "convenience" -> Depression
    • Cyberbullying
    • Who teenagers trust the internet and social media with sexting
    • Lack of privacy
    • CYBER-SAFETY: Easy for stalkers, paedophiles, and cyber-predators to find and attack victims
    • Internet Trolls on social media created and causing
    • Bret Lee, will have some statistics he can share with us in accordance to cyber-stalking
    • Contact Griffith Uni about mental health in social media and find someone to get quotes from and interview for our documentary

I have bolded the points that my group and I are most interested in and plan on implicating into our documentary film. I have found a lot of interest in human behaviour/psychology, so for my individual treatment, I am going to explore the aspect of the effects on human behaviour/psychology.

    Social Media Research

    INSTAGRAM

Founded by: Kevin SystromMike Krieger (Burbn, Inc.)
Founded when: October 6, 2010; 5 years ago
    Founded where: San Francisco
Purpose: Instagram is a social media app that allows users to share photo's and video's either publicly or privately onto their profile for people to see. They can also be shared through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as FacebookTwitterTumblr, and Flickr.
Why people get attached: I think one of the main reasons why people really like Tnstagram is because it is basically a collage of photo's that represent the part of you that you want to show everyone else. There is an option to have an ongoing 'theme' between your photo's to make it aesthetically pleasing to look at. Also, there has been an obsession with the amount of 'likes' that you get on a photo, giving value to the idea of being popular and having more 'followers'.

    Positives:
    • Instant sharing of photo's that you take
    • Connecting with other people on a platform of sharing videos and photo's
    • Showing people interesting things that are happening in your life
    • Be informed about what is happening in other people's lives
    Negatives:
    • Obsession with gaining heaps of followers and being popular, usually followed by a frustration in not being able to do so
    • Obsession with getting many likes from people and, again, followed by a frustration in not being able to do so
    • People judge other's by the way they present themselves through instagram

    • Can be used as a platform for sexting
    • Easy target platform for cyberbullying
    • You can only look at a picture for a certain amount of time (can also be a pro)
    • Ads can give a bad image and have a bad influence on people at young ages

Celebrities are big users of twitter and use it to keep in contact with their fans and grow a relationship with them on a small level.

To Sell A War - Documentary

In class last Friday, we watched a 28min documentary called 'To Sell A War'. The link to the youtube clip can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaR1YBR5g6U

"It exposes the Citizens for a Free Kuwait campaign as public relations spin to gain public opinion support for the Gulf War. As well, it reveals that Nurse Nayirah was in fact Nijirah al-Sabah, the daughter of Kuwait's ambassador to the United States Saud Nasir Al-Sabah, coached by Hill & Knowlton to forge her infamous testimony about Iraqi soldiers removing babies from incubators, which was widely reported and repeated throughout the media."

The documentary, I believe, can be classified as a mix between Exponential and Observational. The way that there is a god-like voice speaking in an authoritative tone throughout the film, shows that it has aspects of an exponential documentary. Also the information being told was rhetorical and was trying to persuade the viewers, proposing a strong argument and point of view. However, it also has Observational documentary aspects as it observes a situation without actually being involved or making an impact on it. The film shows the viewers two sides of the story.

The film had a large emotional impact on the audience and this was one of the reasons why it was different to the other documentaries that we watched in class. At the beginning, footage was shown of a young girl crying over a matter that would have damaged her for the rest of her life. We were positioned to feel sorry for her. However, as the documentary goes on, the audience is informed that the young girl may have been putting on an act and the whole story that she told was a lie. Knowing this, the audience is put through a confusing emotional journey as we don't know what to believe and we don't know what pieces of information we are being given, is true.

Pro's and Con's of Social Media

Social media today is a huge controversial subject; whether it is healthy or not for our human development. In Friday's class we discussed some points that could be argued either for or against the idea of social media and the internet in general.

      Pros.

      • Allows people from all over the world to connect, no matter how far the distance
      • Instant messaging to friends and family in needs of communication or emergency
      • People can promote their businesses online, advertisements
      • Jobs and work can be created and found
      Cons.
      • Target advertisements, the internet 'knowing' what type of searches you make and thereby targeting you for certain ads that they know you will be interested in
      • People are becoming so used to talking online and not face to face
      • Obsession with social media and lack of human contact can lead to illnesses such as depression
      • There are many cases of online predators and this can be a danger to young social-media users

It was difficult to find a reliable website that stated the worst 10 documentaries of all time. This, I figured, may be because that these lists rely mostly on personal opinion rather than a universally compromised decision. Also, it is not a list that film makers attempt to appear on.

      Supersize Me Research

It is said that this documentary is one of the all time favourites. A lot of people love it. BUT at the same time, many people dislike it and have many things to say about it. I have decided to hop onto google and take a look at some these reviews.

This article: http://www.cchfreedom.org/cchf.php/33#.VrNJVYTENBU is clearly one that doesn't approve of the documentary and states that "He models disdain and disrespect for the severely obese by repeatedly filming their buttocks."

This article: http://www.cracked.com/article_20585_6-famous-documentaries-that-were-shockingly-full-crap.html places the documentary Supersize Me as the 6th most famous documentary that were "shockingly full of cr*p".

This article: http://listverse.com/2015/02/09/10-big-documentaries-accused-of-skewing-their-facts/ places the documentary Supersize ME as the 7th biggest documentary that is accused of skewing their facts.  This website is also a very trusted website so it is very reliable

No one has been able to replicate the results of the experiment in this documentary and apparently

He got a divorce with his [vegan] wife

      Exaggeration in the documentary
      • The truth about his weight
      • Some of the doctors may have over exaggerated some predictions like saying "If you keep continuing with this diet, you may need to call 911 within the next few days. Your eyes may turn yellow and you could become pale and very sweaty"
      • Skewing the results of the blood tests. PERHAPS Morgan could have eaten a McDonalds directly before the blood tests which could interfere with the accuracy of the results hence making them more exaggerated and extreme.
