Purpose: Instagram is a social media app that allows users to share photo's and video's either publicly or privately onto their profile for people to see. They can also be shared through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr.
Why people get attached: I think one of the main reasons why people really like Tnstagram is because it is basically a collage of photo's that represent the part of you that you want to show everyone else. There is an option to have an ongoing 'theme' between your photo's to make it aesthetically pleasing to look at. Also, there has been an obsession with the amount of 'likes' that you get on a photo, giving value to the idea of being popular and having more 'followers'.
Positives:
- Instant sharing of photo's that you take
- Connecting with other people on a platform of sharing videos and photo's
- Showing people interesting things that are happening in your life
- Be informed about what is happening in other people's lives
Negatives:
- Obsession with gaining heaps of followers and being popular, usually followed by a frustration in not being able to do so
- Obsession with getting many likes from people and, again, followed by a frustration in not being able to do so
- People judge other's by the way they present themselves through instagram
