Pro's and Con's of Social Media

Social media today is a huge controversial subject; whether it is healthy or not for our human development. In Friday's class we discussed some points that could be argued either for or against the idea of social media and the internet in general.

Pros.

• Allows people from all over the world to connect, no matter how far the distance
• Instant messaging to friends and family in needs of communication or emergency
• People can promote their businesses online, advertisements
• Jobs and work can be created and found

Cons.

• Target advertisements, the internet 'knowing' what type of searches you make and thereby targeting you for certain ads that they know you will be interested in
• People are becoming so used to talking online and not face to face
• Obsession with social media and lack of human contact can lead to illnesses such as depression
• There are many cases of online predators and this can be a danger to young social-media users
